AI and Blockchain: Current Challenges and Opportunities
Entrepreneur | Researcher | Author | Speaker | Chair, IEEE Blockchain Technical Community
Key Ideas:
- Core tension: Blockchain = high trust, low computation; AI = low trust, high computation
- Three integration approaches analyzed:
- On-chain AI: Too expensive (hundreds of dollars per inference)
- Off-chain AI with on-chain verification (ZK proofs): Still centralized, expensive
- P2P AI networks (BitTensor model): Scalable but latency/reliability issues
- Fundamental problem: No "correct" answer in AI (satisficing vs optimization)
- Governance and validation remain unsolved challenges
- Recommendation: Don't build new blockchains - use existing infrastructure
Dr. Ramadoss brings over two decades of experience spanning academia, industry, and international blockchain governance, with a unique focus on blockchain standards, technical community building, and bridging research with real-world implementation. As the leader of the IEEE Blockchain Standards Committee and a member of the Expert Panel of the European Union Blockchain Observatory and Forum (EUBOF), he has been instrumental in shaping the technical frameworks that underpin blockchain adoption worldwide.
With a PhD in Electrical Engineering from the University of Colorado at Boulder and experience conducting R&D projects for DARPA, NASA, the US Army, the US Air Force, Sandia National Labs, and Motorola Labs, Dr. Ramadoss brings deep technical expertise to the conversation. His academic contributions include one book, three book chapters, and 55 research papers (960 Google Scholar citations), while his role as an international speaker has taken him to over 90 conferences across 40 countries — positioning him at the intersection of blockchain research, standards development, and global policy.
His presentation will provide essential insights on blockchain technical standards, the evolution of IEEE's blockchain initiatives, and the critical role of technical governance in building trustworthy decentralized systems — all informed by his extensive experience leading the technical community that sets the standards for tomorrow's blockchain infrastructure.
